About Me

I'm Syrah — also go by "Sy"—a literary nonfiction writer waking at 4:00am to write in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I earned an MFA from the Bennington Writing Seminars where I drafted my first manuscript, a memoir: The Inner Elsewhere. While I work to find a publisher home for that debut, I've also started several other literary nonfiction projects, including an essay collection and a series of flash vignettes.

🍒 Reunited with bookish friend (and fellow homeschooled one who has such a heart for abuse victims) @pleasecallmecordelia after meeting in Michigan cherry country nearly a decade ago.

Got to introduce her to my partner and his kids & we all caught up while doing artsy things & she even brought a bookish offering 📕

🚘 Fellas, take notes:

🛣️ in my partner’s 14,000+ Uber rides,

🚦he has gone the extra mile to make female passengers feel physically/emotionally safe by . . .

1) introducing her to safety features in the app

2) letting her change her mind at any time about the destination address

3) offering a stop to the police station if she is dealing with something serious

4) giving a listening ear & encouragement if she is leaving or in a toxic relationship

5) accommodating her request for a stop at public restroom if she wants to cry & fix her makeup

⚠️ As someone who has been in an abusive relationship previously, I am so thankful for the way he makes me & his daughters & other women feel safe.

🚸 Shoutout to all the guys doing their part to make women feel safer

🔮 My most insufferable trait: thinking every mundane thing is a grandiose symbol (hence numerology and other esoteric whimsy in my writing)

🎹 My worst procrastination: I’ve owned a seaboard for years & am still too intimidated/preoccupied to play it (even though I took piano lessons for a decade)

👩‍🏫 How people respond when I say I was homeschooled: “Well that explains a lot.”

My partner asked what I wanted for my 🎂 today.

I said I’d enjoy the day alone & then see him this weekend.

He obliged, knowing me well and meeting my needs.

My ex did not know me so well, accusing me of being a cheater or selfish whenever I asked for space & time apart.

I feel so much safer now that I’m allowed my solitude—which is to say, now that I’m allowed to be myself. Can you relate, ladybird?

P. S. After some last-minute changes, I won’t be spending today alone after all & am excited about other PTO plans with my editor and partner . . . but I’m still thankful that alone time was even an option!
